Summary
This seminar examined the exciting but often controversial area of 'Personalized
Medicine' from 3 different perspectives: Commercial, University, and Policy. One
of the key themes for the day was Pharmacogenetics and its potential to
revolutionise medical diagnosis and treatment.
Professor Patrick Sissons, Head, Department of Medicine
and School of Clinical Medicine opened the day, which included talks
from distinguished academic and industry speakers.
Industry speakers included Dr Kenneth Hillan, VP Development Sciences,
Genentech, who gave a talk on Herceptin, and Dr John Stageman,
AstraZeneca.
Academic speakers included Professor Chris Lowe, Head, Institute of
Biotechnology talking about the latest developments in Biosensors and
Diagnostics; Professor Carlos Caldas, Department of
Oncology presenting his work on clinical cancer genomics and molecular
profiling as a new tool for the determination of cancer classification and
prognosis; and Professor Peter Lipton, Head of History and Philosophy of
Science, and chair of the Nuffield Report on Pharmacogenetics,
addressing the ethical issues surrounding Personalized Medicine in the Policy
session.
Dinner was held in the beautiful surroundings of Queens' College. We were very
pleased to welcome the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Ian Leslie
who chaired the dinner and also Dr Alan Smith, Chief Scientific Officer,
Genzyme who addressed delegates after dinner.
