Assistant Director - School of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Director in the Research Operations Office to take up appointment as soon as possible.
The purpose of the role is to provide leadership of the administrative process and the allocated staff to support the research funding needs of the relevant Schools. This involves heading up communication between the Research Operations Office and the Schools and constituent departments, academic and administrative staff. The post-holder is responsible for ensuring that the Research Operations Office is delivering services aligned with and in support of the School’s strategic aims and an ability to plan the delivery of the services required and to achieve their implementation is needed.
The Assistant Director is a key source of strategic advice to the School regarding the procedures for the formulation of research proposals which conform to University requirements and address the relevant criteria of all our major funders. The position provides strategic information, guidance and advice to senior academic and administrative and therefore up to date knowledge of key strategic issues in research administration is required.
This role has a number of relationships to maintain including those with the other members of the Cambridge University Health Partners in particular Cambridge University Hospitals R&D office. This role is essential in ensuring that processes between the various parties are as joined up as possible. The Assistant Director will be instrumental in the formation of the Joint Research Office. The role also includes liaison with other partners on the Addenbrooke’s site including the MRC and CRUK.
The post holder also has responsibility for matters relating to Research Governance for research involving human participants. In addition to this, the team is physically separated from the main office so the role of AD is crucial to ensure it is effective operationally and remains consistent with the rest of the Research Operations Office.
The post holder will be a member of the Research Operations Office’s Management Team and will be an active participant in deciding and implementing the policy, strategy and operational direction of the Office. You will have a relevant postgraduate degree or educated to degree level with an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education/training. You will have significant successful experience in complex grant administration with demonstrated initiative, planning skills and organisational ability. You will have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to motivate, manage and co-ordinate, and to lead improvements in a team environment. Experience of managing a team is essential.

Senior Contracts Manager

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Contracts Manager in the Research Operations Office to take up appointment as soon as possible.
The Research Operations Office acts as a bridge between the University's academic community and research sponsors all over the world, by agreeing the contractual terms that govern sponsored research. This post is part of the School of Physical Sciences and Technology team where you will negotiate agreements for research collaboration, projects sponsored by Research Councils, charities and industry agreements.
The postholder will have joint overall responsibility for Contracts staff and will lead on key decisions and deal with management issues in the team. He/she will also have responsibility for ensuring that appropriate collaboration across the University is progressed and for developing relationships with external sponsors as appropriate. Negotiating complex research contracts and agreements for all the School departments; protecting the University’s access to the results of research for further use or commercialisation.
Educated to degree level or equivalent you will also have extensive experience of negotiating in either a university or with industry in a partnership environment, preferably at a senior level. Project management experience and a legal background within a scientific field would be considered beneficial. Familiarity with interpreting and understanding detailed contractual documents is essential as is an appreciation of the strategic value of business development and an ability to manage research relationships over time. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills to be able to motivate, manage and co-ordinate and lead improvements in a team environment.

Contracts Manager

The Research Operations Office acts as a bridge between the University's academic community and research sponsors all over the world, by agreeing the contractual terms that govern sponsored research. This post is part of the School of Biological Sciences team where you will negotiate agreements for research collaboration, projects sponsored by Research Councils, charities and industry agreements.
As a Contracts Manager you will protect both the researchers' and the University's interests, by ensuring that the contract terms safeguard both the University's charitable and academic position and the researchers' need to publish results and pursue further research. You will also consider the sponsor's need to ensure value for money as well as protection of results for potential commercialisation, and an appropriate access to intellectual property rights.
A background in negotiation is essential and project management or a legal background within a scientific field would be an advantage. You must be well organised and able both to prioritise and work to deadlines. You must also be able to work well independently and in a team and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. In particular you will have the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to a wide range of people of varying levels of knowledge and expertise, including the highest levels of academic, corporate and government representatives. Diplomacy is essential. You will have experience working in a University environment and be proficient in using Microsoft IT packages. You will be educated to degree level or equivalent.
