Planning and Resource Allocation

Newton Trust CTOs

In 1992 the Isaac Newton Trust established a scheme aimed at increasing College Teaching Officer (CTO) involvement in Faculty teaching, thereby increasing the amount of University teaching available. The scheme also helps to make it possible for Colleges to afford the consequent reduction in CTO teaching.

The scheme will be withdrawn to new entrants after 2011 as a result of a recent consultation exercise, though the Trust remains open to discussions about a replacement scheme.

With the agreement of the Trust and the College concerned, CTOs are appointed to particular Faculties as affiliated lecturers for a period of up to five years. Now that the scheme is being run down and no new appointments are envisaged, the Trust wishes to simplify the arrangements for reappointment. When a vacancy arises on completion of a five-year term, the lecturer concerned may be renewed for a further period of up to three years, on the same terms as before, if this arrangement has the approval of the School, Faculty and College concerned. It is the responsibility of the Faculty to secure these approvals and to notify the Trust of them.

Prior to 2006-07, officers of the Planning & Resource Allocation Office (PRAO) were responsible for authorising payments to Newton Trust CTOs. Since 2006-07, payments to Newton Trust CTOs have been built into School budgets. Letters of appointment continue to be sent by the PRAO, and Schools should continue to keep the PRAO informed of any changes (e-mail Nick Tamkin at nt248@admin.cam.ac.uk).
