Mentoring

Since October 1996 the University has formally required all its institutions to make arrangements for mentoring newly appointed staff. This applies to existing staff taking up new positions as well as those coming to the University for the first time. Details of the policy on mentoring are available online.

Any newly appointed member of academic or academic-related staff may be allocated another individual to act as their mentor, whose responsibility it is to give advice and information on everyday aspects of the job. This complements the formal employment information provided at induction, and can range from pointing out the location of a photocopier or the University Library to explaining the 'process' of getting a College fellowship.

Your local administrator can explain the mentoring arrangements in your institution, and tell you who your mentor is, if you don't already know. Where possible, your mentor will be chosen because their background and experience are similar to yours, so that your particular questions and concerns can be understood and answered.
