CareerStart@cam
Are you an assistant staff member already working for the University of Cambridge or one of its Colleges? If so:
- Are you new to the workplace? In your first career post?
- Have you returned to work after a career break, or long-term illness?
- Are you embarking on a complete change of career?
- Would you welcome some additional support and developmental training?
CareerStart@cam is a programme designed to support employees currently working in assistant staff roles, and who don't already hold higher education qualifications. It helps you to develop your skills, experience and qualifications, in order to work effectively in your current role and also to progress in your career.
CareerStart@cam will support individuals at work through a programme of regular reviews with you and your line manager, and by arranging relevant part-time training. If you participate in CareerStart@cam you could achieve an NVQ, an Apprenticeship, a City & Guilds qualification, an HNC, or a foundation degree, whatever is relevant to you and your job.
Feedback from participants and their line managers:
- “Being encouraged to obtain recognised vocational qualifications builds confidence and increases the prospect of promotion”
- “I have become more confident and have learnt a lot from my Supervisor, who gives me extra feedback at the review meetings”
- “CareerStart@cam provides a good framework for the employee's professional development”
Am I eligible for CareerStart@cam?
CareerStart is for you if you are:
- New to the workplace, returning to work after a career break or long-term illness, changing career track, or similar
- Aiming to achieve a qualification whilst working
- Committed to developing your skills and career
- Not already qualified to degree or equivalent level
What should I do next?
If you are interested in CareerStart@cam, please discuss this with your line manager in the first instance. When you have their support, contact the CareerStart Co-ordinator for an informal discussion about the programme and training opportunities available to you. If you are eligible and decide to go ahead, we will set up an initial meeting with your supervisor or line-manager to draw up a tailored programme of reviews and training.
We also provide additional in-house skills development courses and other activities, which enable CareerStart@cam participants to meet each other and network, socialise and gain peer support.
