Courses

Open programme

The University offers a range of courses and events to support staff development. If you already know which course you want to attend and are ready to book please go straight to the University Training Booking System.

Administrators' Development Programme

This programme is intended for administrative and other officers who have been in post for one to five years or who are experienced administrators in another context. It is for those whose primary role is administrative, whether they are specialists or generalists. The development programme comprises six days over six months plus time to work on a team project. It draws on the expertise of senior figures in the University, including Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Divisional Directors and provides up to date information on the various strands and issues of University strategy and governance. It also includes skills development and a valuable opportunity to network. Application to the programme is by nomination by Head of Institution.

Leadership Masterclass series

For administrators and others who have responsibility for other staff, a Leadership Masterclass is held each term. This is targeted at managers and leaders who have taken part in one of the University's leadership and management development programmes. However where space allows, the masterclasses will be opened out to others, including administrators. The masterclasses are given by experienced leaders, usually external to the University. They will speak on a particular leadership topic which will be followed by discussion and questions with the audience.

Institute of Leadership and Management

The University is an approved assessment centre for the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), a national awarding body specialising in management qualifications. We offer two levels of externally accredited awards: - Level 3 Award in First Line Management - Level 5 Award in Management

Assessment for each award is by the production of various pieces of work, including a work-based assignment, reflective reviews and a presentation. These demonstrate how you have applied your learning from the programme to your work. The sessions focus on developing management and leadership skills in the context of working within the University. Each session involves a combination of theory and opportunities to practice the new skills learnt. The methods used include tutor input, small group and individual activities, case studies, practice sessions, videos and group discussions. Participants are encouraged to build on previous experience and to continually relate course content back to the issues and situations faced in the workplace.
