Academics: Probation and PHEP

Pathways to Higher Education Practice

PHEP helps you towards understanding your role, key responsibilities, how you fit into your department, and most importantly, to reflect on what is expected of you and how best you might achieve it.

Probation

Probation is the period during which you are to demonstrate competency in undertaking the duties of a lecturer: you must be proficient in teaching, research and administration (general contribution to the activities of your institution). More information can be found about these duties by following the navigation panel above right.

Mentoring

The University values the support that mentors can give to all members of staff, particularly in the early stages of a new job. Since 1996, the University has formally required all its institutions to make arrangements for the mentoring of its newly appointed staff. Make sure you have one! Additional information can be found here.

Staff Review and Development

Staff Review and Development provides the opportunity for you, your Head of Department and other senior colleagues to engage in constructive discussion about your current work and future and plans, and personal and career development.

You might like to attend a workshop Staff Review and Development for Reviewees in preparation for yours
