Agronomy Group

The Agronomy Group is a leading centre for research on potatoes.  We work to advance understanding of the crop and improve production.  Based at the Cambridge University Farm (CUF), where agricultural teaching and research extends back over a century, we are housed in the purpose-built Agronomy Centre.  Completed in 2004, this building provides facilities to complement our predominately field-based research.  Experiments are conducted at the CUF site, and also at locations throughout the UK and in other countries including France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the USA.

Our research covers aspects of:

  • seed production and management
  • crop physiology
  • nutrition
  • crop growth and development
  • variety evaluation
  • epidemiology and disease control
  • soil conditions and soil management
  • water use and irrigation

We develop models of crop growth and water use as research tools and for practical crop management and irrigation scheduling.  Our models are run as commercial services alongside potato seed disease testing and consultancy services for growers.

Recent and current research includes projects funded by the Potato Council, PepsiCo, Syngenta Crop Protection and Bayer CropScience.  Cambridge University Potato Growers Research Association (CUPGRA) also supports our research and provides a valuable forum for the exchange of information through regular interaction between researchers and industry.
