Disposal of Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came fully into effect on 1 July 2007. The Regulations require that WEEE should be:

  • Collected separately from other waste
  • Passed to a suitable recycling contractor
  • Treated and disposed in an environmentally sound way

The regulations include ten categories of Electrical & Electronic Equipment (EEE) which cover almost any electrical or electronic item with a voltage of up to 1,000 Volts AC or 1,500 Volts DC. The main exceptions are filament light bulbs, large-scale stationary industrial tools and implanted & infected medical devices.

The University has therefore established a centrally managed system for the legally compliant and environmentally sound recycling and disposal of redundant IT equipment and other WEEE. This is a no-cost service for University Departments.

For any Redundant IT equipment, electrical office equipment (e.g. fax machines, fans, electric heaters, etc.) or small amounts of laboratory equipment (<5 items) please use the collection request form to arrange collection of any equipment requiring disposal. Please contact the Environment Office to discuss the disposal of large amounts of laboratory equipment (>5 items).

Please e-mail the completed form back to environment@admin.cam.ac.uk

We will forward the completed form to our contractors, and contact you with collection details.

Where possible, all data and licensed software should be removed prior to collection, but hard disks will be data wiped and/or physically disabled by the contractor to prevent access to any remaining data.

Please note that the disposal of any equipment bearing an 'MISD Asset Register' sticker should be arranged through the MISD Service Desk to ensure that all equipment is correctly logged prior to disposal. (Contact: misd.service.desk@admin.cam.ac.uk / Tel 32999).

Where old computer equipment is being replaced by new items, it would be advisable to check that the supplier does not offer a take-back scheme for old equipment, before arranging disposal by this route.
