Cambridge Climate Change Charter
The Vice-Chancellor signed the Cambridge Climate Change Charter on behalf of the University of Cambridge on 21 December 2007.
The Cambridge Climate Change Charter is based on the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change, which Cambridge City Council and over one hundred other local authorities have already signed. By signing the Nottingham Declaration, the City Council acknowledges the increasing impact that climate change will have on the community during the 21 st Century and commits to tackling the causes and effects of a changing climate.
The University is one of seven initial signatories to the Charter who will help to establish a critical mass from which other organisations in the Cambridge area can be encouraged to adopt similar strategies.
By signing the Cambridge Climate Change Charter, the University of Cambridge acknowledges that:
- Evidence shows that climate change is occurring
- Climate change will have increasingly significant effects on the people, organisations and environment of Cambridge;
and makes a commitment to contribute towards tackling climate change by:
- Establishing a baseline of emissions from our activities which cause climate change
- Assessing the risks to our activities posed by climate change
- Setting challenging targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Taking action to reduce the emissions resulting from our activities and the risks posed to them by climate change
- Reporting the progress we make in taking action at least annually
- Working in partnership with other organisations to address the causes and consequences of climate change throughout Cambridge
- Encouraging those we work with to take similar action to address the causes and consequences of climate change and encouraging them to commit to this Charter where they are located in Cambridge
- Assigning responsibility for these climate change commitments to a senior individual
