The Chancellor visits Cambridge
9 October 2007
The Chancellor, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was in Cambridge yesterday, his fourth visit to the University this year.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alison Richard, received him with the Master of St Edmund's, Professor Paul Luzio, when he arrived at the College yesterday morning. Prince Philip, an Honorary Fellow of the College, was shown around two new accommodation blocks before unveiling a plaque and meeting staff and students.
Founded in 1896, St Edmund's is one of six graduate colleges in the University, and also caters for undergraduate mature students. It is also one of the most diverse, with members coming from over 50 different countries.
After lunching at the College with invited guests, the Chancellor then had a tour of the Schofield Centre, off Madingley Road. Part of the Department of Engineering, the Centre carries out simulations of earthquakes, tsunamis and other geological phenomena to inform and assist industry on the design of tunnels, pipelines and even housing.
The Chancellor had previously visited the Centre in 1989. He was keenly interested in and impressed by developments in technology and understanding since then as he was shown around by Professor Malcolm Bolton and Professor Robert Mair and met several researchers.
The building he visited was formally opened in November 2001. It was designed around the existing Schofield Centrifuge Centre, which opened in 1986 and is named after the University's Emeritus Professor of Soil Mechanics, Andrew Schofield, who was present to meet the Chancellor.
2007 marks thirty years that Prince Philip has served as Chancellor of the University. He attended a day of celebrations to mark the anniversary in April, and was also in Cambridge with Her Majesty The Queen in February to open the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute, and again in June to confer honorary degrees.
